Academic Application with Kimberly Cooper, Ph.D.

The Research Roundtable 2015 will focus on perspectives from faculty about the various aspects of being on the academic job market; from their job search experiences to the interview process. Throughout, the faculty members will talk about best practices and lessons learned to help you navigate the academic career path.

The speaker will give a short presentation and then open the topic up for Q & A. This event is limited to 20 postdoctoral scholars and a light lunch will be provided. If you attend, please be willing to participate in the discussion.

This month will feature Kimberly Cooper, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Division of Biological Sciences, who will discuss the academic interview.

Speaker Bio

Kimberly Cooper is Assistant Professor in the Section of Cell and Developmental Biology of the Division of Biological Sciences. She started her independent position in November 2013. Previously she was a postdoctoral fellow for 8 years in the lab of Dr. Cliff Tabin in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. She received her Bachelor’s of Science with Honors and Distinction in Biology from Cornell University in 1999 and a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Washington/Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in 2005.

As a PhD student, she was initially funded by an NSF Predoctoral Fellowship and then by a Developmental Biology NIH institutional training grant (T32). Her postdoctoral work at Harvard was funded for the first 3 years by a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. Her research focuses on the mechanisms of development of the vertebrate limb and the evolutionary modifications to these conserved mechanisms that give rise to morphological diversity (i.e. bat wings, whale flippers).
